Matthew Auty is not a name known in the world of stereoviews - indeed even the meticulous Tex Treadwell seems to have no record of him. He was, however, a professional photographer living and working in the Tynemouth area of northern England.
Born in 1851, he was originally a tobacco dealer and is recorded as living at 18 Edith Street, Tynemouth in the 1881 census. Shortly after that date he opened a photographic studio at 20 Front Street, Tynemouth, where he plied his trade producing cartes-de-visite, studio photographs - and stereoviews.

From there he disappeared back into history but, perhaps, he can be reincarnated and given some recognition for his interesting work. Most of his views are of the Tynemouth locality and are on heavy board. Where a date appears, it is invariably 1900.  Professional, printed, cream mounts were also used and there are a few of these at the end of this page. An obvious influence on his work was the vast oeuvre of George Washington Wilson.
