Beccles and the Waveney Valley.
The rest of the views in this section show the area in
which I live and where Robert was born and came home to
visit his father. It
is just as beautiful now as it was them. Sir Alfred Munnings was living
in Mendham near Harleston at this period and was painting all along these
river banks. His painting companion for many years was Mia Welham-Clark
who, with her sister Lily and brother Philip, went to school with Munnings
and remained lifelong friends. In 1916, while working as official artist
with the Canadian cavalry regiments on the Western Front, Munnings wrote
home to Mia 'I know just how the river is looking below your place now
- the water moss by the edge of the bank - the autumn colouring coming
there amongst the growths. The willows and distances and all'. He was a
frequent visitor at the Welham-Clark's house standing over the river with
unspoilt valley views stretching for miles. The Welham-Clarks kept the
house in their family from the year it was built (1902) until 1999. Then,
having no children, David, the nephew of Philip, put it on the market.
Jenny and I bought it and now enjoy the views which inspired Munnings to
become probably the most important 20th century British artist. 'Stepping Hill, Beccles'.
Untitled but this is the River
Waveney at Beccles.

Untitled. The Waveney at Beccles.
Hire a boat for the day and chug up the five miles to the Geldeston Wherry
pub for lunch. You might meet the odd moorhen on the way.
Untitled. More upriver from
Beccles toward Geldeston.
