England, Devonshire (page two)

The next few views are by the delightfully named Owen Angel. Angel was a printer and lithographer as well as a photographist - as he describes himself on the back of his views.  Please click  HERE for a website describing his life and work. He had one annoying trait - as far as I can see he never put a location on his views, neither handwritten nor printed. I have burned the midnight oil to identify some of these. Some of his views of Exeter Cathedral can be seen by clicking on our page of minor cathedrals.

Owen Angel. When enlarged, the title on the plinth of the statue is Thomas Dyke Acland, who turns out to be the 10th or 11th Baronet - both of whom were politicians and educational reformers. The statue is in Northernhay Park in Exeter - which led us to the next view . . .

Owen Angel. While researching the previous view, we find that John Angel - surely a relative - was a famous sculptor who was commissioned early in his career to create the war memorial in Northernhay Park. In 1928 John emigrated to the USA. By the time of his death on 16 Oct 1960 in Connecticut, John Angel had established himself as one of the foremost sculptors in America. His numerous commissions included figures for the cathedral of St John the Divine in New York and a striking figure of Francis Vigo for the George Rogers Clark Memorial Park in Vincennes.
But, I digress; this view turns out to be the entrance to Northernhay Park in Exeter (see modern pic above) where John's statue now stands. Which leads us on to the next view . . .

Owen Angel. Obviously the same entrance from the other direction  - which led us (tentatively) to the next view . . .

Owen Angel. OK - so now I'm struggling. This and the next I would like to think are in Northernhay Park, and this one at least, seems to match modern pics. I'll have to conceed that this is an unid.

Owen Angel. This and the next two were as anonymous as they come. However, a study of the nearest gravestone produces a Jerimiah and Mary Esworthy. Entering 'Esworthy' in Google produces a geneology site recording this marriage:
'27 Apr 1775 Mary SERCOMBE (of this parish, spinster, signed) = Jeremiah ESWORTHY (of this parish, yeoman, signed) by banns begun 22 Jan 1775 - witnesses James ESWORTHY (signed) and Andrew CAZELEY (signed)this entry'.
This would make our happy couple both 16 when they married. The marriage is recorded as being at Dunsford church in Devon. A long shot that they would have lived in the same place and been buried in the same church pays off when a modern pic identifies this as Dunsford churchyard. Simple if you haven't got a life!

Berry Pomeroy Castle. Abandoned some time between 1688 and 1701 this is reputed to be one of the most haunted castles in England. Now stripped of its ivy, it looks far less fascinating to me than it did in the mid-nineteenth century. There are numerous websites on Google for those interested.

   The castle today.

The next view is by Duprez of Plymouth - Darrah also recorded one view.
Professor Jean Louis Philippe Duprez, (or as he was more often known, 'Louis Duprez' or 'Professor Duprez') was brother-in-law to the first Plymouth Borough Librarian, William Henry Kearley Wright.
Professor Duprez was a popular and well-known magician and illusionist. He performed his acts of trickery (and séances) all over the country in the 19th century.
Duprez was born at Barnstaple on 5 April 1844, and lived for most of his life in Plymouth.
He died whilst 'on tour' with his 'hypnotised dogs' at Hastings on 18 March 1899. He left a widow, Adela, who was his second wife, and three daughters who lived in Plymouth - the last surviving daughter died as recently as 1951. Professor Duprez, senior (Jean Joseph Duprez) was bankrupted at least twice and moved all over the country - from London to Cheltenham to Barnstaple and then to Plymouth.
Professor Duprez, junior (who is depicted in the image above) 'carried on the business of a photographer at West Hoe'. He later found his talent for trickery, something that he 'inherited from his father'. His occupation on the 1881 census is recorded as 'Professor of Legerdemain' - indicating perhaps that his work in conjuring acts was now his main occupation.
