Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight was popularized in the mid-nineteenth century by the decision of Queen Victoria and Price Albert to rebuild Osborne House on the island. By all accounts they spent some of their most happy times there together and, although blighted by low wages and high unemployment, the Isle of Wight is still a delightful place to spend a few days and seems to be stuck in a time warp of around 1960.
Views of the Isle of Wight are highly popular. Scanner has resized some views slightly larger but they are all standard size.

Queen Victoria died at Osborne House in 1901. Recently, most of the 'Mrs Brown' movie was filmed there.  It was rebuilt under the direction of Prince Albert in the Italianate manner and from its grounds Victoria and Albert could watch the review of their fleet in the Solent. Britain then had dozens of warships and the Fleet was an impressive site. Now we have two rowing boats and a dredger but we can live better with our consciences.
If you want to look it up on the net, it is now spelt 'Osbourne' for some unknown reason. Better still, it is open to the public and has been preserved as much as possible inside and out as it was when Victoria and Albert spent their early, happy days there, so pay a visit next time you're this side of the Pond.
