Not a name that trips off the tongue,
Fortescue Mann was a Hastings photographer who later set up a business
in London. Most of the views on this page are handwritten (18)97 on the
back but some probably were from earlier negs. He deserves a wider audience
and I regard him as one of the finer undiscovered photographers. He has
a different approach to almost everyone else and uses working class subjects
and events. Even his views of the 1897 Jubilee are sharper and more immediate.
Well worth having a few in your collection.
'Father Andrew discovers a
new knocker to the monestery door'.
'The Regents Canal'.
Untitled.
The rest
of the views are of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee celebrations in London
in 1897. Series of these exist by Underwood, Kilburn, Excelsior etc. Don't
know what it is about Mann's views but they beat the rest hands down.
