This view comes with a lengthy Victorian poem printed by William Gaspey of Keswick, titled 'Lodore Cataract'. The poem is by Robert Southey who was Poet Laureate from 1813 to 1843. He was even worse than some recent Laureates as you will gather from the poem. His main claim to infamy however is that Charlotte Brontë submitted some of her early work to him for criticism, to which he replied inter alia 'Literature cannot be the business of a woman's life, and it ought not to be'. Basically '....get back to the knitting, girl'. Anyway, people in glass houses ..... here is an example of the rubbish he was churning out.
