Derbyshire as a popular holiday destination for the rich declined in the twentieth century and we tend to forget the massive popularity among the wealthy during the nineteenth century of such places as Matlock and Buxton - and of course the surrounding stunning countryside of the Peak District. This was reflected in the high quality and wide variety of the stereoviews available. Stereo World, volume 30, No 3, carried an interesting twelve-page article by John Bradley on the stereographers in Victorian Matlock. We make no apologies for the large extent of this page and are pleased to be able to offer so many fine views. This is probably the largest collection of Derbyshire views for sale in one place in the world. There seems to have been an effort among the photographers (even those whose output is variable, such as Helmut Peschler) to produce the very finest views with regard to both photography and processing. This obviously reflected the higher prices which could be realised for these views among the wealthier clientel.

John Latham, Matlock. 'Chatsworth
