J. & J. Dutton, 44 Milsom Street, Bath. '384. Chatterton's Monument'. Chatterton was born in Bristol in 1752. His father was a master at Pyle Street free school near St Mary Redcilffe. He commited suicide at the age of 17 by taking arsenic and a celebrated copyright case was fought over the stereoview 'Death of Chatterton' in the 1850s. Many thanks to Dave for the following research:
St Mary Redcliffe,an Architectural
History by Michael Quinton Smith (Published by Redcliffe Press 1995
says '...Sadly visitors to Redcliffe can no longer enjoy the most significant
essay in this early style of Gothic Revival, the 'kind of Eleanor Cross'
erected in 1840 to the memory of Thomas Chatterton to a design by S.C.
Fripp. This memorial had a chequered history, for a while being banished
from the churchyard by one vicar since the poet had committed suicide.
This monument was, alas, demolished as recently as 1967. As a work
of art it was perhaps more curious and amusing than beautiful, but it did
none-the-less represent a serious, and locally significant, effort of a
generation which hardly understood the true principles of Gothic architecture.
Perhaps the weakest element of the whole design was the figure itself,
too small a doll, dressed as a Colston Schoolboy, holding a scroll of his
tragedy Aella.'
Dave continues:
'I do not know the location of the 'bits' of the statue if they still exist,
I did read somewhere many years ago that they were once seen languishing
in a council yard. The reason why it was eventually demolished in 1967
was because it was falling apart. I recall that from time to time
people have talked about getting it restored ... and there was a news item
some years ago which linked the actions of that vicar with it eventual
demise but my view is that the reasons were practical rather than spiritual'.

W. Brooks, Photographer, London.
'Drawing Room, St. Michael's Mount, Cornwall'. William Brooks was, afer
Robert Hunt, one of the most influential people in Cornish photography.
Born in Maidstone in Kent he visited Cornwall first in 1872 or 1973 and
stayed in the Penzance area until 1870. This view is illustrated on page
37 of Views and Likenesses by Charles Thomas, with the following
caption:
Standing
just north and east of the church, and traditionally the Lady Chapel of
the pre-Reformation Monastery, the room was restored and converted after
1740. Today, decorated in blue, it houses choice antiques and St Aubyn
family portraits. In William Brooks' stereoscopic view it appears to be
rather bare with the chairs under dust covers. The slide is labelled "No
10" with the words "W. Brooks, Photographer, London". This suggests that
he had not quite decided to settle in Penzance or had only just done so
and was not yet issuing such items in Preson's larger series'.
