ENGLAND - LONDON

Views of London, especially 19th century streets, are for some reason far scarcer than those of Paris. I think that it was because, in the period 1870 to 1900, apart from a little hassle with the Germans at the beginning, Paris was a tourist city and London was a working city. Discuss!

Victor Albert Prout is another Victorian photographer who has been rescued from obscurity by the skin of his teeth. Click  HERE for an interesting website. Joan Osmond, a direct descendant, has produced a biography of Prout. Having spoken to Joan on a number of occasions I can vouch for her being a delightful lady with all her marbles - although being well past her 'fourscore years and ten'. Prout's views of the interior of Westminster Abbey must rank amongst the finest interior stereoviews of the 19th century - especially as they were produced in the late 1850s and early 1860s. He emigrated to Australia and did some fine work there. After returning to England, he sadly died in 1877, aged only 40.
