Keystone. 'Through the uncharted
heavens, she blazed the trail, dirigible R-34 at Mineola'. This was the
first round trip across the Atlantic by air in 1919. At approximately 9:00
AM on July 6, 1919, R-34 arrived at Mineola, New York, after crossing the
Atlantic from Scotland, and Major E.M. Pritchard parachuted from the airship
to the ground to supervise landing operations -thus becoming the first
transatlantic traveler to arrive in the U.S. by air. R-34 had departed
East Fortune, Scotland on July 2, 1919, and completed the 3,130 nautical
mile journey to America in 108 hours and 12 minutes and returned in 75
hours and 3 minutes, landing, incidentally, at the airship base at Pulham
in Norfolk - which is just up the road from me. Airships round here are
still known as 'Pulham Pigs'.
