Adolph Braun

Adolph Braun of Dornach was one of Europe's most prolific publishers. He made most of the Anthony European views and was active between 1856 and the early 1870s. He produced an excellent series of the Grindenwald ice caves some of which are offered here. His views of glaciers and mountain-climbing are described by Darrah as 'exceptional'. Many of these have first-owner notes on the back and quite a few are dated either 1861 or 1862.
Braun views seem to fall into two distinct periods. Earlier views are often quite crudely trimmed; his finishing left something to be desired at times and fading is also a problem on some. Many also have a strange white spotting which nobody seems to have a good explanation for.  I have graded them down slightly when unsure. Differences may be down to using a new scanner on some. The old scanner tended to make the views dark. The new scans are also a slightly different size but the views, of course, are the same size. The new scanner also tends to trim edges a bit. All views are NOT trimmed unless mentioned otherwise.

There some views at the end on yellow mounts which are entirely different and combine high quality with imaginative camera work - indeed bearing comparison with the work of William England. No processing complaints either.

We have decided to keep most of Braun's work in one group so these views stray into Germany and, possibly, Italy.

Please ensure that you use the order # not the view number when ordering. I have put them is some kind of numbering sequence although they might not all be from the same series. Size differences are due to scanner settings.

Joseph Tairraz and E. Savioz

Joseph Tairraz worked alone and later with his brother in the 1850s and 1860s in Chamonix. He became partners with Savioz who eventually took over the business. His work is good and similar to that of Braun.
